Phuket's Vegetarian Festival, Thailand

Warning: Shocking Images

The festival of Phuket is a Chinese tradition that takes place during five days every October. It is based on the belief that stopping eating meat during the 9th lunar month will clean their bodies, physically and mentally.

The festival is celebrated in different kind of ways, like firewalking.

But undoubtly, the most spectacular ceremony is the body piercing act; men and women puncture their cheeks with all type of objects, believing that God will protect them from harm.
