Giraffe Women of northern Thailand

The Kayans, also known as the Giraffe Women because of their long necks, are a tribe originated from Burma but emmigrated to northern Thailand in the late 1980s.

Although the neck rings are nowadays a symbol of beauty and cultural identity, it started as a way of protection from slavery by making women less attractive.

Girls start to wear the rings at the age of five.
